Decklog by Leon Piacun BMC USN RETIRED on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 09:19 I believe I am a member of the USS saratoga CVA-60 Looking for Johnny Blakeway MM-2, also BMCM APGAR. WW.CLIFTON BMC CHIEF MASTER AT ARMS 59-65 OR EARLIER. DUKE SNIDER BM1 AND I FEEL IF I MAKE THE RE-UNION I WILL SEE SOME OF MY FORMER SHIPMATES IN OCT.2013
SHE WAS AND IS; STILL A GREAT SHIP!!! IT WAS A SAD DAY WHEN THEY PUT HER UNDER USING HER AS A REEF. I REPORTED ABOARD HER AS A BM2 AND LEFT HER 6 YEARS LATER CHIEF BOATSWAINSMATE. i THOUGHT AT TIMES SHE WAS MY PERMANENT HOME.I WOULD COME OFF LIBERTY AROUND 2 AM AND SHE WAS SITTING THERE LIKE A MOTHER HEN WAITING FRO HER BROOD TO COME HOME TO REST UNTIL 0600 REVEILLE. ALL HANDS HEAVE OUT AND TRICE UP. COURSE WE HAD NORTHHAMPTON BUNKS THEN. I WAS MOMENTARILY BACK ON MY BATTLESHIP USS IOWA B-61.WE HAD THE OLD CANVAS BUNK BOTTOMS. I WAS ON THE BRIDGE PIPING ALL HANDS TO HEAVE OUT AND TRICE UP. I CAN SAY MY TIME IN THE NAVY WAS A PRECIOUS 21 YEARS. I HAD SOME GREAT SHIPMATES ON SARA AND I'M MUST BE AGING SOMEWHAT BECAUSE IT SORT OF MAKES MY EYES WATER A LITTLE THINKING BACK ON THOSE TIMES. I'M REMINISCING SOMEWHAT. I WILL DO MY BEST TO GET TO THE NEXT RE-UNION IN OCTOBER 2013
Virginia

Decklog by Michelle Mares on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 11:01 My grandfather, Wayne Howard Grob "Shorty" served in WWII on the USS Saratoga. He recently passed away on December 06, 2012 in his home town of Champaign, IL. After his passing, I was blessed to have been given his Navy Blues, Flight gear, and flight logs. If any of his shipmates are still living and you knew my grandfather, I would love the opportunity to speak with you.
I wanted to thank each of you for your strength and love for our country....for you are and always will be the "Greatest Generation." Thank you for giving us freedom so many years ago!
