I REMEMBER ON THE 1971 MED CRUISE, WE WERE ANCHORED IN ATHENS HARBOR, AND DID "A FIRST" IN THAT WE LAUNCHED
2 F4J PHANTOMS WHILE AT ANCHOR. THE BOW WAS POINTED RIGHT AT ATHENS AND WHEN LAUNCHED, EACH PLANE TURNED
SHARPLY, ONE TO THE RIGHT, ONE TO THE LEFT AND THEN THEY CAME BACK AROUND IN A LONG WIDE CIRCLE TO BE
RECOVERED ON THE FLIGHT DECK. I WAS LUCKY TO BE UP ON THE ISLAND TO WATCH, IT WAS GREAT.

I was the OS Div Off 1978-80. The tour -- two great MED deployments -- remembered fondly. The men in the division were superb in every respect. SARA was a great ship. Berthed in Mayport aft of FORRESTAL, maybe we weren't as spiffy but never missed a committment. CAPTs Bill Martin (later C6F) and Jim Flatley (Jr) were the skippers then. Great men who were great leaders. Happy holidays to all shipmates. Steve

So much to say... 1. Thanks for this tremendous site, you guys are incredible. 2. Thanks to the Saratoga, my first U.S.Navy family, changed my life 3. Thanks to all the SARA family members who also think she was the finest the Navy had to offer, and made her that way. 4. Thanks to all that worked so hard to save her as a museum. I live only 1 hour from her resting spot, in Newport RI, but I haven't built up the nerve to see her, YET I served onboard from November 79 (in the mud) till just before her departure from SLEP

It seems like yesterday when I was ships company with S-6 for the 78-79 and '80 cruises. Can anyone beat Barcelona and Palma in the summer? Great & challenging times, but my time & choices nontheless. Turns out that hitch had a big impact on my life-back to school in '82, stayed in the reserves, and convinced a new college grad and prospective Navy Nurse to skip it & marry me. Like to hear from old shipmates.

Served Sara from about 70-72. I remember the Med Cruises and Tonkin Gulf quite well, but after 30 years remembering names is a bit more difficult. I'm interested in some of the young folk that worked for me in the Captain's Office just to see how well their careers have done. Very good site. I served on 3 ships: USS WISCONSIN (BB-64), USS DES MOINES (CA-134), and USS SARATOGA (CVA-60/CV-60). I remember the SARATOGA the best because that's when I finally matured and understood whaq life was all about. That was also when I made Chief Petty Officer!!!!

I am writing to let everyone know that after more than 20 years, I am now the PROUD owner of a 78-79 Cruise book. I had ordered one but left before I could get it. I left a forwarding address, but it never came. I would just like to thank Marty Morgan for helping me out. I looked through the book and saw things that brought back memeories. Even some things I didn't remember. Too many trips to Texas Jack's I guess. Well, see you all around. I am still waiting for the Museum to open.

I served on the great Saratoga during the years of 73-75 working on the flight deck with the Crash & Salvage team. I went through that Cuba shakedown cruise after the Portsmith Drydock Phase. I remembered all the drills and drills during that time. , that Air Boss was a real pain in the you know where. I remembered that Cuba was so hot during our stay, that the only place that had good air conditioning was in our Crash Station on the Island on the flight deck. My wife and I are going to take our vacation in Newport, RI in Oct. of this year. I'm going to take her to Quonset Point where I was stationed befor I got my orders to the Sara, and I'll even see Sara there too! If anyone remembers the guy with that new Harley-Davidson motorcycle during that time, that's me!

We know where some are: Guerra, Carver, Reller, Dunsworth, Bailey, Moebus, to name a few. Let' sget back together one more time and have a party. We're also thinking of doing an H-Div newsletter. Get in touch with us. Don't let all these airedales and other squids outdo us.

Served on board Super Sara (CV-60) from 1979 - 1983 were I left her in the yards of Philadelphia to be stationed at AGIS Combat System Command in Moorestown, NJ. I have many memories of a lot of great people; “The Sara Team” Med Cruise ’80 was the greatest! I think many of us could say, we grew up to become men while serving onboard her, Thank you Sara for bring all of us back home safely so many times! God bless us all! Would love to here back from anyone who may have cross paths. Great times in Mayport. I was there back on September 10th for work, (National Sales Manager) and I was able to talk my way onboard the base. I stood where Sara was docked, (Now USS KENNEDY), for what must have been at least two hours. Great memories came to mind. The enlisted brake room is still there, across the parking lot. Served onboard November77-Oct 81. Two and a quarter Med cruises,SLEP as yeoman in Weapons Department office. Rear Admiral Flatley was one of the finest commanders I had the privilege to serve under. I talked him into autographing a photo of the SARA for me, hangs proudly in my study. I remember Marty Morgan playing the guitar in Weapons Office. I also remember processing literally thousands of ship's ID cards since the Weapons Department was also in charge of physical security. In the words of Captain Flatley, "Make it happen!"

I servered with VA-105 (Gunslingers) as an AZ3. Was aboard for the '71 North Atlantic/Med cruise and the '72 - '73 WESTPAC cruise. Anyone remember sinking to the bottom of Athens harbor when Sara lost a shaft seal? How about the fire in Singapore? Many, many great memories of fantastic ports and friends. The Daphnie Wine Festival in Athens, Corfu, Palma, Cannes, Genova, Olongapo (too many times into that one!) The Shellback initiation(s) One of 5,000 + Plank Holders in the CV concept. Anyone else 'surf' the bow nets? I treasure my time aboard the finest fighting ship the Navy ever set afloat. Any other former Gunslingers out there?

I haven't posted a message here in quite sometime, but I do come back and read the log entries from time to time. Probably 75% of the entries are shipmates looking for former shipmates. We have 3000+ members and the first place to look is within the Association. A $10 membership dues is all that's required to become a member of the largest carrier Association in the country, and a lot of you will find the shipmates you're looking for within our group. As an added bonus, if you chose to attend one of the reunions, you'll keep coming back. So come on, the "Grand Lady of the Sixth Fleet" needs YOU. Again and again. You all are looking for your lost shipmates or beach buddys or just your best friends. One of the perks of Saratoga Assn, membership is. We print up a membership directory, listing all Assn members. It is updated each year with the NEW members, changes of address and soo on. Sorry but this book only goes out to current due paying memberships. It's the biggest expence we have each year other than the reunion in Oct each year.If your not listed in the membership directory, maby your shipmate is. You wont know that till you join up one more time!! You will also receive two other U.S. Mailings to help keep you informed as to what is going on and how to take part in the main events. All you have to do is fill out the membership form and U.S.Mail it to me. My address is at the bottom of the form. Just click and print. Can it get any easier than that??? MAKE IT SOOOO. This is an open request to all the former Saratoga sailors. Guys, I recently joined the Saratoga Association and just received the membership directory. Without going through it in great detail, I found the addresses of three former shipmates. I imagine I will find more when I do a more thorough search. This is good stuff. If you haven't already joined the SARATOGA ASSOCIATION, I urge you to do so. The list of membership is HUGE. If you're looking for a former shipmate, this is a great start. I am also going to join the SARATOGA MUSEUM FOUNDATION. If we are all as fond of SARA as the ship's log indicates, the Museum Foundation could use our help in getting SARA PERMANENTLY berthed in Rhode Island as an Air/Sea Museum. Every little bit helps and each of us can do our part, however small it may be. Only WE can ensure that SARA becomes a permanent part of US Naval History and is around for future sailors to visit and see. Richard E. Molina <ThaViper@nyc.rr.com> Howard Beach, NY USA - Saturday, March 23, 2002 at 16:00:07 (CST)
I am a veteran but not of the U.S. Navy. (Is the Air Force okay enough? ) The mother of a friend of mine was once telling me of the time that the U.S.S. Saratoga was sabotaged while it was in repairs in Vancouver, WA. She said that during WWII she worked at the Vancouver Shipyard when the Sartoga came in for battle repairs. She said that the ship was repaired at the Portland, OR shipyard then towed to Vancouver for finishing work. She had a job of painting the stencilled signs on the bulkheads. She said that there were so many workers on board that they were like ants. All at once everyone begin to notice that the ship was beginning to list. It continued to list until it stuck harmlessly in the mud of the Columbia River. No serious damage was done. She said that someone had opened several values deep in the hull and river water was pouring in. The word got out to the workers that it was sabotage because of the security clamp down afterwards. Do you know that such an event ever happened? If it did happen, do you know of the results of the investigation? Was it ever discovered who did it? She has a fascinating story and I have no reason to doubt her. I am a amatuer military historian and the story fascinates me but I would like to confirm is it is true. Do you know if anything was ever written about he incident if it did happen? Thank you for your service in WWII. Your country is very proud and thankful to you. Thank you. Paul M. Kennedy (Hopefully, "Underway" means "Send" because that what I am going to press next.) Paul Kennedy <PaulMBanker@AOL.com> Spokane, Wa USA - Friday, March 22, 2002 at 23:44:05 (CST)
