Ahoy shipmates! I can't believe I found this on the Internet. More of you should be in the Ships Log. I served aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga, CVA-60 from about May '60 to 'Aug.'62. Homeport was Mayport, FL. Jax Beach was a blast! I was in the 3rd. Div., yes, a deck ape. Made two Med Cruise's. On one of them we had a fire in the engine room just before we pulled into Athens. We lost several of our shipmates. Our compartment was located on the aft starboard side, next to the chow line, and down the ladder. I'm going back about forty years and trying to remember the names of some of the guys in my div., excuse the spelling: Reece, Olowski (Ski), Sal ("really big"), Bartlet, Jessie, Bob Turnbull (loved the Navy), Ronecker (Roach), Allegre (Alligator), Lambert, Robinson, J.B., Whiskey. A lot of good memories on the "Sara."

Attempting to locate a John Cline who sailed with me on the USS Saratoga CVA-60 in 1960 and 1961. His home at that time as I recall was Cavetown Maryland. We served in the CIC division of the ship, sometimes referred to as the radar division. We made one Mediteranean cruise together. If you have any information on this person please email to the above address. Also, to anyone else who reads this, I would appreciate it if you could tell me the specific location of the ship, so i can visit it with friends and family if it is available to the public for touring. I was on board from '63 to '65 and made two Med cruises. V-1 Division, Fly3 Blueshirt. Never worked so hard in my life. Nothing like 7 or 8 back-to-back 20-hour days humpin' chocks and chains. When they made me operator of #4 elevator I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I still remember every liberty and best of all; pulling back into Mayport. I wish I could go back and do it all again!

VF-31 TOMCATTER (1963-1966)worked the roof of "SARA" as plane captain ,A/C # 105,F4B Phantom II. The below letter was written by one of the co-founders of the VF-31 TOMCATTERS ASSOCIATION. The Sleeping Giant Re-awakens: By "Every American", USA The media has brought broad coverage of the recent WTC disaster to our living rooms. We’ve seen our President speak several times to address the people of the United States. I think it is time to look squarely and firmly into the camera and address the attackers. And now a few words for the terrorists: After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan’s Admiral Yamamoto was quoted as having said “We have awakened a sleeping giant and have instilled in him a terrible resolve.” After sleeping for more than half a century, the giant has once again been awakened. In those 50+ years, it has grown bigger, more powerful, and with far reaching arms that now encircle the entire globe. Of course, the giant we speak of is “America,” and it is indeed instilled with a more terrible resolve. It will identify the vicious animals that planned the attacks, locate them, capture them, and finally eliminate them. There is no place to hide. The animals are you. At first glance it may appear that you have succeeded in your efforts. In reality you have failed because in our land once filled with individual differences, we have now come together and set aside our differences to fight a common cause. You have created unity of the American people with our government, bonded Democrats with Republicans and broken racial barriers, so that we can work together and defeat your evil cause. You have brought together the rich and poor, the young and old. You have unified religious beliefs, and strengthened us morally. For the first time, you have united America with the world against you. Thousands of America’s young innocent children and grandchildren have lost a Mom, Dad, Grandmother, or Grandfather, and thus guaranteed generations of bigger, more angered, and more powerful giants to come your way. A few may have been frightened, but Americans are fearless standing together. A small portion of America and its spirit may have been destroyed, but the people are invincible as one. Their hearts are strong and cannot be broken. The giant has stumbled, yet still stands firmly on both feet. It has shed tears and blood, yet the wounds have been patched and are already beginning to heal. You cannot defeat America. In the end when you and your supporters are long dead and gone, the great American giant will still be standing proud. You and your supporters don’t have the mental capacity to understand the immorality of your actions or to know that you cannot hide with your sins remaining un-punished. To the entire civilized world, you are viewed as ignorant barbaric animals when you celebrate in the streets. It only serves to further build the strength and determination of the giant, helping it to gain allies and justify its actions in seeking you out and destroying you. You have done your evil deed, but the giant has survived, has awakened and is very angry. Now it is your turn to run for cover and live in fear… because the American giant is coming! By the time you see it, there will be no time to respond. You may not recognize it in advance because it can take any form, its skin may be any color, and it will speak all languages. It may appear in human form with clothing of red, white, and blue; or it may bear naked wings of strong cold steel. It has great speed and agility, the strength and endurance of an elephant with the stubbornness and determination of a donkey. Like the eagle that represents it; the giant can see you from high above and may suddenly dive from the sky to attack you, its prey. It may come from the ocean or from land. You will not know when, where, or how it may appear. The only thing that is certain is it will come. Beware, for the giant will not sleep again until its “terrible resolve” has been fulfilled! - RGH, California

1961 entered the US Navy went to the Honor Guard for a year.Oct, 1962 reported on board the Sara, was put in 4th. Div. boats. Have a lot of fond memories of my time on board andof the people I served with. It's surprising how few people you knew on a ship of that size. I went to the Charlestown reunion and going to 2002's hope to meet more new mates. Retired 1 Jan from reserves as a BMC still running boats in ACU-2 Mike-8's.

Hi Shipmates. Served on the sara from Dec,1967 to Aug,1971 in V-1 div. Looking for any of my old buddies, such as the Peaslee brothers, Dan & Richard, Don Frasca, Finn, Beetle Bailey, Terry Ross(goofy), Tim White, Lucas, or anyone who worked in Fly One during that time frame. Remember me I'm the Yellow shirt that got ran over by the MB-5 firetruck and lived. I finally retired from the Navy in Feb,'94. I'm enjoying life and my grandchildren. The Sara was the only ship that I was part of the ship's crew, I found out that squadron life was better, but I still remember all the good times that I had on super Sara. She was and still is agreat ship.

Hi. Shipmates, I miss the Sara even after having to paint the flightdeck's deck so we could have a nice clean deck for President Nixon to walk on. I served on the Sara from Dec., 1967 to Aug., 1971, assigned to V-1 Div. If anyone has a '70 cruise book I,m the yellowshirt #4 in the picture directing the A-3 at the start of the V-1 division section. I retired in 1994 as a ADC, and now enjoying my grandchildren. Still having fun, but with alot of gray hair Ha Ha....
