I served aboard as a Plankowner in the Marine Detachment from 1956-1958. The time has come to solve a 43 year old mystery. During the latter part of my tour someone painted the ship's mascot green. That Rooster had so much paint stuck to his feathers he walked as if he had rickets. I don't believe he could even open his mouth to crow! As is usually the case, the Marines were blamed for this crime. We were innocent and had absolutely nothing to do with this nefarious incident. Had it not been for the steadfastness of our Marine Captain, we would have stood guard duty to protect a green chicken. I went to the recent Charleston reunion. Every Sailor who recognized me asked the same question. " Do you remember when the Marines painted our Rooster green?" Telling them we didn't do it did not allay the suspicion. The time has now come, and the guilty party needs to step forward and admit to this deed. There is no need to be concerned with a court martial as the statute of limitations is long gone. The Marines who were falsly accused are now prepared to let bygones be bygones. If the former Sailor with the green paint brush reads this, you now have the belated opportunity to fess up. You will feel better for it. Now Justice will still have to be served. As punishment you would have to treat each Marine Plankowner, you come in contact with, to a cold beer. This seems reasonable to me. Years from now, when I breathe my last, I want to know I left this world vindicated and not held responsible for the misfortune which befell a loud mouthed Rooster.

Dug out my old 8 millimeter movies that I took of the Med cruise in 1958. Man, what memories when I watched them again. I had taken alot of shots from the signal bridge of both Catapult shots and recovery on the arresting gear. These films are very fragile now so I have to have them transferred to video tape before I lose them entirely. I also have shots of the bullfights in Palma. Seems like yesterday.

I came out of Boot-Camp & went thru Pre-com School in Newport & on to the Super Sara in Brooklyn. I was a 17 year-old BOOT..I still remember the 1st time we went under the Brooklyn bridge. All the traffic was stopped to watch a Super-Carrier go under it.I was on the Bridge & I didn't think we would clear it. I was assigned to 1st div.(Gunnery)from Mar. 56 to June of 59. I recall the collision we had in Hampton Roads. The Stbd anchor we lost during testing of the anchor-brakes while at sea. And---the green painted Fighting-Cock on the hanger-deck... We never made much money but -- we had alot of fun..

I was assigned to VA-35 Attack Squadron in 1957 thur 1961. Our squadron was stationed on the U.S.S. Saratoga for her maiden cruise to the Mediterranean in 1958. Again in 1959-60. I started the third cruise in 1960-61, but i was discharged before the cruise was over. I was on my way back to the States when they had that bad fire which killed several sailors. I tell my family, thanks to the Navy, I saw alot of other countries and have a lot of excellent pictures. Our squardon won the first intramural basketball championship that the Sara had, which I was a member of. I have a lot of good memories of the cruises I was on. If there is any one out there that was in VA-35 from 1957-1961, email me, Thanks

Gentlemen, I am researching my family history, and currently my father's military service. I finally received copies of his military papers from the US Navy and discovered that he was aboard the USS Saratoga from July 3, 1958 til October 2, 1958. Under the heading, "Purpose of Transfer", it reads... TAD IN CONNECTION WITH MAINT. OF HU-2 DET #43 HELO. I suppose that has something to do with maintaining and servicing helicopters. Anyway, I just wanted to send this note out to others I found on the internet who served on the Saratoga at or around the same time, hopefully to find someone who remembers him, but most of all to help me learn a little more about the ship, the places he traveled to, what he did while aboard...things like that. If you are in contact with others who served during that time on the SARATOGA, please feel free to pass this email message along. I'd be honored to meet and correspond, via the web, with anyone with whom he served. His name: Joseph Burnett ROBERTSON DOB: April 3, 1939 DOD: March 20, 1965 (25 years old) From: Camden, South Carolina and later, Bayville, New Jersey Trained at Great Lakes, Illinois Stationed at: US Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, New Jersey Many thanks! Just reading some of the messages. Was a YN3 and served 1958 - 1960. Transfered to the USS Des Moines and stayed in the Med during the Sara first Med cruise. Does anyone remember in 1958 the trials off the U.S. coast and loosing an anchor at sea. The hydralics locked up and what a roar, chain and anchor was lost, I was in the forecastle at the time. Really enjoyed the two years on the SARA. and living in the Fox Division with some crazy sailors. were the first vacating through the hatches.

We all know the old yarn about sea bats in a bucket, but there are those who say they really exist -that science has yet to classify and study them or describe their place of origin and instinctual behaviors. I am of that persuasion because In my nearly four years at sea I made two sightings, plus I have learned that there is no scarcity of critters that science has yet to classify and study, in places like the Amazon and Key West. There was one seen by hundreds on the hangar bay wall during 1958 Med cruise, and I saw one up close on some metal-work of the L S O's mirror but didn't want to touch it for fear it might jump out and bite! They are mouse sized with tawny fine red fur. Both my sightings were made out at sea many hundreds of miles from land.

My happiest holiday memory for some reason is the Christmas of 1955. I was going through boot camp at the time in the frozen tundra of Great Lakes December Through February and spent Christmas there. They had a big house, three stories, all decorated up for the holidays, really quite beautiful and you could sit around on sofas and forget about the hell you were going through for a few hours. Anybody remember the name of that house? I was in Company 764, Company Commander was old "185 Pounds Of Walking Hell" SS1 Stevens. There was a whole bunch of memorable tunes that debued on the radio during that stretch of time -the winter of 55-56. A few off the top of my head were The Great Pretender, Poor People Of Paris, Band Of Gold, Rock an Roll Waltz, Memories Are Made Of This, Moments To Remember, Dungaree Doll, Heartbreak Hotel, and Silver Bells. I had a couple of first liberties in Waukeegan, I saw Guys And Dolls and had a spaghetti dinner. Lightnin'

My uncle was a radar operator (was not in squadron) on the Sara during 57 and 58 (Lebanon Crisis). He may be known by Ken or Kenny. Email me if you remember him. Also I saw footage of the Spads, Guppy Spads, Skyrays, A3D's, and F8U's taking off and landing on his old home movies. I remember them from books and museum pieces except for the A4D. Remember the guy at the ceremony on deck (crew was in whites) who fell out? My uncle's friend was Bill Padgett (sic on last name?).
